5 Jan 11 For those of you that are on the top of your division standings, it is time to start thinking about the photo that you would like to submit for the Horse Show issue of the COTH. I realize this is a long list of guidelines, but if you want to make sure your photo will be used, please read them carefully. They are very strict on the photos and know the difference between an original and a copy.

All horses/riders that end up CH of your division, please mail the photo to me NO LATER than January 5, 2011. Many of you often ask when the issue will be published and the answer is March 11, 2011.

Thank you again for joining KHJA and I look forward to another great year ahead.

Photo Submissions: o Champions only. o Action shots only. o Original color prints only-no copies or digital emailed photos accepted. o All required information must be printed on photo (see below). o Only photos submitted with the mailed results by the association will be accepted.

Photos must be submitted by the association only. After the issue is published, the photos will be returned to the association (not individuals). (Note: Photos are held for a couple weeks following publication so any questions relating to them can be addressed. Photos will be returned to the assocations in early April.)

ALL of the following information MUST be on all photos:

  • Name of the Association
  • Horse
  • Rider in the photo
  • Owner
  • Photographer's name (even if not a professional)

Include all the information, even for equitation classes. It helps us match the names to see if they won in other organizations. Double-check all spelling!

Photos should be color prints. Emailed digital photos NOT ACCEPTED.

Include photos for the champions only-reserve champion photos are not used.

We do not accept digital photos on disk or via e-mail for the Horse Show Issue. We can only accept original prints.

The photographer's authorization for publication, if necessary, must be included with the photograph. For some photographers we have their releases on file. However, not all photographers give blanket releases and there are instances where this release is not sufficient. Read this letter for some examples of those situations. If in doubt, ask your photographer.

We will only accept original photographic prints. We will not accept copies of professional photographers' photos, proofs, scanned copies, photos that are not clear and of poor reproductive quality, digital images, or vignette prints and photos. If there is any question regarding the authenticity of a photo, we will not accept it.

If a horse or pony has won multiple championships, only one photo will be used. If a horse or pony won its division with one rider and another rider won an equitation division on that same horse or pony, the photo with the equitation rider on the horse or pony will be the one used.

Photos must be action shots. Do not send candid or award photos; they will be rejected. (Hunter Breeding is the exception.) Photos must be of high quality and must be printed on quality photo paper. Personal photos printed on your home printer are not high enough quality and should be professionally printed at high resolution.

Photos must be no smaller than 31/2" x 5" and no larger than 8" x 10".

Photos must be from the 2010 show season. If there is a sticker/stamp or copyright date on your photo that shows a year other than 2010, your photo will be rejected.

If your photo has a sticker on it, put there by the professional photographer who took the photo, that says it must be of a certain size before it can be published, then it must be of that size or be accompanied by a release from the photographer for that specific photo. A blanket release from the photographer does not include these photos.

Photos that are unauthorized copies of a professional's photo will be rejected. We cannot accept a professional's photo that you have scanned and re-printed. A release from the photographer does not include these photos. If there is any question regarding the authenticity of a photo, we will not accept it.

NEW THIS YEAR: Winners of USHJA and USEF Horse of the Year Awards should submit their photos directly to us if they wish to have their photos in The Chronicle's Horse Show Issue. We will no longer be receiving photos from the national organizations.

All photos MUST come together with the results FROM THE ASSOCIATION'S SECRETARY. Photos should NOT be sent separately by individuals or by photographers. The association is responsible for verifying all photos meet required standards before sending.

If you have any questions regarding these guidelines please contact Melanie Harrison at results@chronofhorse.com.

23 Dec 10 The banquet invitations should be arriving today or tomorrow. I will be extending the deadline to January 5 to give some extra time to get things back. The price of the dinner is $30 per person or $5 if you will be attending the banquet, but not the dinner. If you have gone out of town and are unable to send the actual RSVP card back, please send a check to me at 1742 Lakewood Lane, Lexington, KY 40502. Upon receiving your reservation, I will mail you a bracelt back to get you in the door. You may bring your ballots to the banquet if you are unable to mail them back in, just make sure you have your return address on the envelope. I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

15 Dec 10 The 2010 Banquet invitations will be sent out in the next week or so. Here are the details so you can mark your calendar. The banquet will be held at the Cincinnati Airport Marriott on Saturday, Jan. 8 (we usually have it the first Saturday, but that is New Years Day). The Jr. meeting will begin at 3:30, followed by the Annual Meeting at 4:00. The seminar this year will be presented by Anne and Skip Thornberry who are the owners of Midwest Equine Rehabilitation and Conditioning Center located in Goshen, OH. Following the seminar will be a cocktail hour and last minute bidding on the silent auction items. If you would like to bring a basket or item for the auction, the form is available on the website. I haven't heard from very many people, so I hope to hear from each barn that will be bringing something. Keep in mind that the proceeds from the auction will go into the KHJA Scholarship Fund.

I haven't received any photos yet for the COTH. If you are way ahead in the point standings and are pretty sure you will stay in the Championship position, please go ahead and send me your photo. I sent the extensive list of "rules" in an earlier e-mail, so please make sure to double check that you have followed those "to a T".

Please remember that in order for you to vote for the BOD, you must have renewed your membership prior to the banquet for 2010 and your name and address MUST be on the outside of the envelope. DO NOT send reservations in with your ballots, as they are not opened until the night of the banquet. I will be sending you a wristband after I receive your reservation. You MUST bring this with you to the banquet in order to get in. Just like a concert, you will NOT be let in if you don't have it. NO EXCEPTIONS.

We will be doing something different this year for those of you that would like to come to the banquet, but don't wish to have dinner. You will need to RSVP and the price for those reservations will be $5. You will also receive a wristband that will be a different color to signify that you will not be eating. We hope that this will help in the confusion of reservations. Thank you all so much for being a part of our association. I look forward to seeing you at the banquet.

Have a very safe and Happy Holiday season!!

31 Jan 10 PLEASE READ!!!!
I have had a large number of members register themselves and their horses, but only send in payment for their membership. Please remember that all horses are $15 and need to be paid for in order to be elligible for points. Not initially paying for your horse creates a lot of extra work for me b/c I have to send you an e-mail and find out if you didn't want to register the horse or you just forgot. Save us both time and read the form and fill it out apprpriately! Thank you so much for your help.

31 Jan 10 Contrary to earlier speculation that dogs would not be permitted on the grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park this show season because of veterinary protocols and safety issues relating to the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™, the Kentucky Horse Park's Special Events Department has declared that dogs will be permitted on the premises while on a leash until September 9, 2010. From September 9 through October 16, 2010 no dogs will be permitted on the grounds of the Horse Park.

28 Jan 10 Just a reminder: If you would like to order any KHJA apparel (jackets, vests, polos, bags, etc.), please contact Jennifer Duncan to receive a catalog. Apparel can also be embroidered with your farm name and/or logo. High quality apparel, great prices and fast delivery.

Here are the guidelines for the Chronicle of the Horse Year-End submissions. If you would like your photo to be printed, please follow the guidelines below:

Photo Guidelines Photos must be submitted by the association only. After the issue is published, the photos will be returned to the association.

ALL of the following information MUST be on all photos:

  • Name of the Association
  • Horse
  • Rider in the photo
  • Owner
  • Photographer's name (even if not a professional)

Include all the information, even for equitation classes. It helps me match the names to see if they won in other organizations. And double-check all spelling!

We will only accept original photographic prints. We will not accept unauthorized copies of professional photographers’ photos. We will also not accept proofs, photos that are not clear and of poor reproductive quality, digital images, or vignette prints and photos.

(Hunter Breeding is the exception.)

Photos must be no smaller than 31/2" x 5" and no larger than 8" x 10".

Photos must be from the 2009 show season. If there is a sticker/stamp on your photo that shows a year other than 2009, your photo will be rejected.

If your photo has a sticker on it, put there by the professional photographer who took the photo, that says it must be of a certain size before it can be published, then it must be of that size or be accompanied by a release from the photographer for that specific photo. A blanket release from the photographer does not include these photos.

Photos that are unauthorized copies of a professional’s photo will be rejected. A professional photographer’s photo will have a sticker or signature or something similar that identifies it as their photo. We cannot accept a professional’s photo that you have scanned and re-printed. A release from the photographer does not include these photos.

All photos MUST come together with the results FROM THE ASSOCIATION’S SECRETARY. Photos should NOT be sent separately by individuals or by photographers. The association should verify all photos meet required standards before sending.

I want to be able to put as many photos from KHJA in the issue as possible, so plese follow these guidelines carefully. They've been doing this for a LONG time and know what's legit and what's not, so don't try and fool them. The photos will be sent back to me and I will make sure they get back to you.

The deadline for The Chronicle is January 15, so I will be mailing our results to them no later than January 10. Please have your photos to me before then. I will NOT be accepting them in person at the banquet, they must be mailed. Thanks!

24 Dec 09 First and foremost, I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Second, I just wanted to remind everyone of the KHJA Annual Meeting and the KHJA/USHJA Zone 5 Banquet to be held in the Keeneland Entertainment Center in Lexington, KY on January 9. The schedule is as follows:

3:30 Jr. Meeting
4:00 Annual Meeting
5:00 Rood and Riddle Seminar
6:00 Silent Auction and Cocktails
Dinner and Banquet to follow.

An Adult meal is $40 and a Child meal (11 & Under only) is $20.

Invitations were mailed out a few weeks ago and all reservations must be made by mail NO LATER THAN JANUARY 1. Absolutely no reservations will be taken after that date. When this date was set, we weren't thinking of the fact that mail wouldn't run on this day. Due to this, if you plan on mailing your reservation, you will have to mail it by Dec.30 at the very latest. Any reservations recieved after Jan. 1 will be returned.

No one will be allowed into the Silent Auction/Dinner without a reservation. Please remember that if you are going to be donating a basket for the auction that there is a form on the website that you need to print, fill out and bring to the banquet with the basket.

Thank you so much and we will see you in a few weeks.

7 Dec 09 There is form for any silent auction items on the Contact/Join page. If you are donating a basket for the auction, please print and fill one out and bring it with your basket to the banquet. Thank you.

25 Nov 09 Just to clarify before the fact, a child's plate at the banquet refers to 11 & under.

12 Nov 09 Click here for the KHJA Silent Auction Item form.

10 Nov 09 The Annual Meeting and Banquet will be held at the Keeneland Entertainment Center in Lexington, KY on Saturday, January 9, 2010. Each member will receive an invitation with the time schedule and menu details within the next month, but I wanted to let you know a few things ahead of time.

First and most important, ,NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED INTO THE BANQUET (not the meeting) WITHOUT A RESERVATION. No exceptions. We are having a sit down dinner and each person will have a placecard with a certain color dot on it so the servers will know what you have ordered for dinner. We have been given a date in which we must give Keeneland a final number. Once that date has passed, no more reservations will be accepted under any circumstances. So, if you show up at the door without a reservation, you will no be allowed in. This has been a HUGE problem in the past, please make reservations. The adult plate will be $40 and the child's plate is $20. The menu will be with the invitation.

Another problem we've had in the past are with the envelopes. Please don't put your dinner check in with your ballots. The ballots are not opened until the night of the banquet, so you will not have a reservation if you do this. Also, if you take the time to fill out the ballots, please make sure you put your name on the outside of the envelope where you would normally put a return address or it will not be counted.

Thank you so much for your time. I hope that you will be able to join us this year. In addition to being the KHJA banquet, we will also be the host for the USHJA Zone 5 Awards banquet. This is the first time we have done this and we are very excited about it.

9 Nov 09 For the November Lakeside "A" show $1000 Junior Hunter and $500 Pony Hunter Classics will be added both Saturday and Sunday. More information will be available on www.LakesideArena.com.

30 Oct 09 Please keep Tamie Parsons-Irby in your thoughts and prayers. Tamie's mom, Barbara, passed away this morning after a long battle with cancer.

18 Oct 09 The show season is coming to a close, so now is the time to be letting me know of any point inquiries you might have. Please send any inquiries to me in the form of an e-mail with the name of the horse show and the individual class numbers in which you are questioning. Obviously I will also need to know your name and your horse's name. Thank you and banquet info will be mailed out soon. It is always the first Saturday in January, so that will be January 2. Mark your calendars.

20 Sep 09 Congratulations to Erin Hickey from Cincinnati, OH on her second place finish in the Maclay Regionals held Sept. 19 during the KY National Horse Show. Congratulations also go out to Lauren Jeffrey who qualified and competed in the class as well.

I look forward to hearing from you within the next couple of days. Emails and texts are preferred.

31 Aug 09 I just wanted to let everyone know, before I start getting questions about it, I received results from the Champagne Run show on Aug. 9, but only for the Hopeful Jumper division. I received CH/RS results for 6 other divisions, but no individual class results. I have sent Maggie an e-mail regarding this, but can't do anything about it without receiving the official results from her. Thank you for your understanding.

The application deadline will be moved back because of these circumstances, however the actual date has not been decided yet. If you have any questions, please contact Tara Gnau at t.gnau@insightbb.com. Thank you.

17 June 09 ATTENTION Members. The KHJA Silent Auction will be held again this year during the Rood and Riddle Grand Prix at the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show. This year, I believe the Prix will be held in the evening making it easier for trainers and competitors to attend. April Whitlock has agreed to take my position this year since I have my hands full with a new baby. 28 Jan 08 Two major changes were made to the rules that will effect how you register. If you show in Beginner or Limit Rider, your horse will have to be a registered member in order to receive points. In previous years, points have gone to the rider, so it hasn't been an issue, but it has been changed so the horse gets the points. Please make sure you don't miss out on points if your horse has not been registered. If you have any questions, please contact me (Jennifer Duncan). The other rule changes will be in your membership book that will be mailed out hopefully by the end of January.

18 Jan 08 After a difficult battle with cancer, long time KHJA member and Board Member Betsy Fishback passed away yesterday afternoon. I believe both of her daughters, Leslie and Sarah, were home with her at the time. Please keep the Fishback family in your prayers.

Visitation for Betsy Fishback will be held at her home at Trackside Farm on Tuesday, January 20 from 3-7. The funeral service will be private family only. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Central Kentucky Riding for Hope.

Click here for an online obituary where you can get directions to the visitation, information about memorial donations, and sign and/or view the guest book.

17 Dec 08 Kentucky Horse Council PARTNERS WITH KY HUNTER JUMPER ASSOCIATION TO RECOGNIZE Competitors Riding Rescued Horses

Lexington, KY, December 16, 2008 – The Kentucky Horse Council (KHC), in partnership with the Kentucky Hunter Jumper Association (KHJA), announced a new program to reward KHJA members competing on rescued horses in 2009.

A $300 cash prize will be given to the KHJA competitor riding a rescued horse with the greatest accumulation of points in 2009. Year end points are tallied by KHC, and the 2009 rescue horse high point winner will be recognized at the 2010 KHJA banquet and at the KHC Annual Conference.

Any KHJA member who competes on an adopted horse is eligible for a year end high point award regardless of the competing division. Interested KHJA members should apply by completing a form available through KHJA or the KHC office and including a copy of the adoption contract. KHJA members seeking to compete for the high point award on rescued horses without an adoption contract may submit an application and essay describing the rescue situation. A panel of KHJA representatives and KHC staff will review applications and make eligibility decisions.

“Supporting the rehoming and retraining of horses through this program is just one of the ways the Kentucky Horse Council encourages equine rescue and rehabilitation efforts,” remarked Madelyn Millard, KHC Board President. “In this economic climate it is especially important to provide recognition and support those horse owners who develop second careers for rescued horses.”

KHJA show managers will have information and applications at 2009 horse shows. Only KHJA members who have completed an application and submitted it to the Kentucky Horse Council will be eligible for the year end award. For more information contact Essie Rogers at 859-367-0509 or erogers@kentuckyhorse.org.

ABOUT THE KENTUCKY HORSE COUNCIL - The Kentucky Horse Council is a non-profit organization dedicated, through education, to the protection, growth and development of the equine industry in Kentucky. The Kentucky Horse Council provides educational programs, grants, scholarships, personal liability insurance, trail riding programs, and an annual statewide equine industry directory.

16 Dec 08 ATTENTION ALL YEAR-END CHAMPIONS Here are the guidelines for the Chronicle of the Horse Year-End submissions.

(Hunter Breeding is the exception.)

Photos must be no smaller than 31/2" x 5" and no larger than 8" x 10".

Photos must be from the 2008 show season. If there is a sticker/stamp on your photo that shows a year other than 2008, your photo will be rejected.

The deadline for The Chronicle is January 15, so I will be mailing our results to them no later than January 8. Please have your photos to me before then. Thanks!

15 Dec 08 Many of you have been inquiring about the St. Louis shows and if their points will count towards KHJA. You will be happy to know that I recieved a check from them and the Jan, Feb. March and April shows are all KHJA recognized.

25 Nov 08 There has been a change made to the 2009 Membership Forms. You'll notice at the bottom of the form, there is now a place where you can make a donation to the KHJA Scholarship Fund. We hope this will help us raise money for the yearly award and please remember that it is a tax write-off.

6 Nov 08 For the 2008 Awards banquet, a few changes have been made to the divisions. We are going to combine the Local Adult Amateur Under 35 and 36 & Over sections and there will not be an award given for the Local Children's Hunter Pony. We will also seperate the Regular Children's/Adult Jumpers into two sections, but the Local will remain combined. If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Duncan. Thanks and hope to see you at the banquet.

21 Oct 08 Marie Remke was hit by a car this morning while walking to school. She had a compound fracture of her lower, left leg and is going to have to undergo 8 hours of surgery today to repair it. She will also have to have surgery at some point to repair injuries to one of her arms. The doctors don't think there were any internal injuries and that she will be in a wheelchair for the next month or so. Please keep her and her family in your prayers. She is at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

18 Oct 08 Dr. Caroline Taylor was chosen by KHJA as the USHJA Affiliate Sportsmanship Award in the Amateur catagory. I was notified yesterday by USHJA that she was also chosen by the Affiliate Task Force as the winner of the Central Regional Affiliate Award. The award will be given out during the USHJA Annual meeting in Nashville, TN on December 10. I know Caroline would have been very excited, honored and proud to be receiving this award.

16 Oct 08 The October Lochmoor Stable show has been moved to November 1-2. Please make the adjustments to your calendars.

7 Oct 08 There was an error on the Point Summary in the Beginner Rider division. Katherine Lewellen was accidentally left off the list. She should currently be in third place with 223 points.

The David Beisel October show was not on the calendar, but is KHJA affiliated and will count for points. There has also been two shows added in November at Limerick Lane Farm in Hilliard, OH. The first is on Nov. 22-23 and the second is Nov. 29-30.

The 2008 KHJA Annual Meeting and Banquet will be held on Saturday, January 3 at the Kentucky Derby Museum in Louisville, KY. More details will be mailed out towards the end of the year.

A beautiful, bronze perpetual trophy was created for the winner in memory of Dr. Caroline Taylor, who was very involved in creating the scholarship and serving on the Scholarship Committee. Caroline's fiance', Jim, was on hand to present the trophy to Candy Dwyer, Christine's mother.

After the presentation, the winner of the Year Free Golf Cart Rental from Dever Inc. was chosen. Congratulations goes to Matt Payne for rigging the drawing. Just kidding, congrats Matt.

29 July 08 Lexington's Division of Parks and Recreation will hold a series of public meetings early in August to discuss the new comprehensive plan for all parks.

They will be:

Aug. 4 6-8 p.m. at Picadome golf course meeting room and Tates Creek golf course ballroom.

Aug. 5 6-8 pm at Meadowthorpe Community Center and Dunbar Community Center, 545 N. Upper St.

Aug. 6 10-noon at Senior Citizens Center, 1530 Nicholasville Road and 5:30-7:00 at Bryan Station High School.

ATTENDANCE AT THESE MEETINGS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO ALL WHO VALUE MASTERSON STATION PARK FOR EQUESTRIAN USE.B

Input received at these meetings WILL determine how parks are used in the next 10 years. Lex Parks and Rec and the consultants who have been hired to complete the new master plan need to hear from ALL horse people who want no changes at Masterson.

There is pressure from the neighborhoods to convert land at Masterson into more high-density uses and uses that are not compatible with equestrian users.

Please make plans to attend any or all of these meetings. Numbers are vitally important and horse people need to make their voices heard. The importance of Masterson as an equestrian facility cannot be overstated. There need to be horse people at every one of these meetings! Please call your friends, make plans to carpool, and distribute this information to all who love to ride at Masterson Station Park.

If you have any questions, please call me!

25 June 08 Do you know a high school aged rider interested in college equestrian? Here’s a chance for riders and their parents to work directly with experienced college coaches to get help with their college search, and with being recruited for riding. We help riders find teams and coaches find riders!

Participants in our programs the past couple years are now riding - many with scholarships - at top riding schools like Virginia Intermont, Texas A&M, Mount Holyoke, Oklahoma State, Hollins, Sweet Briar, Baylor, Kansas State, Findlay, Cazenovia, Charleston, Cornell, Skidmore, Lake Erie, Southern Methodist, Stonehill, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Xavier, Kentucky, South Dakota State, Penn State, Delaware, Ohio State, Saint Andrews, Virginia Tech, Mary Washington, Goucher, and many others! The top kid at the Lake Erie clinic last year earned a full ride to Texas A&M!

We're different than some other similar programs in that our emphasis is on EDUCATION of both rider and parents. As a college coach for over two decades, I know that most students and parents are confused and misinformed about the college riding scene. Campus visitors always come with the same questions, and this clinic is designed to answer those questions and more, to teach you how to choose a school with riding as a factor in your choice, and how to be recruited for scholarships if that is your goal.
